Euro-TMCS II

Cosponsored by the Institute of Physics, EU project DEEPEN and the COST action Multiscale SOLAR the Euro-TMCS II:Theory, Modelling and Computational Methods for Semiconductors Workshop will take place at Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork from 7th-9th December 2016.

Modelling, theory and the use of sophisticated computational tools can represent a substantial cost and time saving for R&D. The development of high speed computer architectures now allows the widespread use of accurate methods for calculating the structural, thermodynamic, vibrational, electronic and optical properties of semiconductors and their heterostructures. This workshop will run for three days, with the objective of bringing together leading experts in the field of theory of group IV, III-V and wider semiconductors together with postdocs and students in their early stages who will benefit from an introduction to a very vast field at this influential point in their careers.

A training day for PhD students and early career researchers will be held on day 1, followed by 2 days of contributed, poster and invited presentations.

Topics will include but not limited to:

  • Density Functional Theory Calculations
  • Tight Binding, Pseudopotential and Effective Mass Models for Electronic Structure
  • Empirical Potential Methods for Calculation of Structural Properties
  • Multi-scale Approaches
  • Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors
  • 2-D systems
  • Photonic Structures
  • Optical and Transport Properties of Quantum Nanostructures including Colloidals and Nanotubes
  • Plasmonics
  • Electronic and Photonic Devices
  • System demands and applications

List of tutors:

  • Matt Probert (University of York) “Plane-Wave DFT and LDA”
  • Ben Hourahine (University of Strathclyde) “DFT-Tight-Binding Theory”
  • Jacky Even (CNRS) “Modelling of halide perovskites”
  • Fabio Sacconi (TiberLAB) “Device Simulations”
  • Stefano Sanvito (Trinity College Dublin) “Non-equilibrium Green’s Function Methods”

A list of confirmed speakers include:

  • Thierry Amand (INSA Toulouse) “Exciton dynamics and spin-orbit effects in atomically thin TMDC and their alloys”
  • Patrick Rinke (Aalto University) “Charge transfer at oxide/organic interfaces”
  • Ivana Savic (Tyndall National Institute) “Modelling of the thermoelectric properties of materials near soft mode phase transitions”
  • Mark van Schilfgaarde (King’s College London) “Hybrid Perovkites”
  • Yuh-Renn Wu (National Taiwan University) “Challenges in Optoelectronic Device Simulation”

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission will commence in July and terminate on the 16th September 2016. After the 16th October we will still be able to accept a small number of poster contributions, but the oral programme will be finalised.

A short abstract is required of no more than 300 words. Please download the Abstract Template (MS Word format) which contains more detailed instructions.

When ready please submit the abstract electronically as an attachment. We can only accept abstracts in MS Word or PDF formats.

Students who wish to apply for one of the twelve €500 bursaries being offered to meeting attendees by the MultiscaleSolar COST Action should state that they wish to be considered for a bursary in the email accompanying the abstract submission, and include a brief CV regarding their career to date and a letter of support from their supervisor.
